GrownFolksMusic.com #NowPlaying: Parlor Social - "I Put A Spell On You"

I claim late gang on this one #Growns. Parlor Social dropped this gem off in the inbox and your boy hadn’t been to the Student Union all weekend. I think I might have still been celebrating Homecoming or something like that. Comprised of Dessy Di Lauro and Ric’key Pageot we’ve featured their great reworking of “No Diggity” with the one and only Teddy “Ready With the 1,2 Checka” Riley. Parlor Social describes their unique sound as follows: If Cab Calloway, Lauryn Hill and Outkast would have a love-child, it would sound like Parlor Social. Yep. Yep.

Again I was ur uh tardy to the party on this great arrangement of the Screamin Jay Hawkins classic “I Put A Spell On You” which is widely known through Nina Simone’s cover. I’ve been a little ambivalent toward the social networking side of the game. Woosah I will push through on that and even though I didn’t get this up before the rising of the Great Pumpkin I’m of the firm belief that great music transcends all time and space. Translation: This song is so good you can play it all year long, just like how I drink eggnog.

So look this is what I would like for you to do first – press play. Ok, you didn’t that right? You see what I’m talking about, don’t you? The song goes several different places and spaces and by the time we move to the end vamp we’re in an entirely different space and time than we began. The way that the arrangement locks in at the end it’s almost, what’s the word I’m looking for… oh yes hypnotic. Almost like a… spell has been cast. Great performances turned in all around. The featured rap by Mr. Act Now or Never and the strings arranged and conducted by the one and only Dr. Benjamin Wright whose list credits truly is a veritable who’s who of music contribute impeccably to the whole of this work.
